Back Pain

Overcome back pain and move freely again. Professional Physiotherapy in Norwich and Norfolk to help you take back control of your body and life.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek Physiotherapy and one of the most frustrating. It can affect your sleep, work, exercise, and overall wellbeing. But the good news is you can overcome it with the right treatment and support!

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints in the UK, and can affect anyone regardless of your age, activity level, or lifestyle.

It’s often caused by muscle strains, poor posture, inactivity, repetitive heavy lifting, herniated discs or fractures. Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis or spinal stenosis can also contribute to back pain, gradually causing stiffness over time. Although these might sound worrying, most cases of back pain are not serious and respond well to the right treatment and advice.

Back pain might feel like it comes out of nowhere – after lifting something, twisting, or even sneezing, but it usually builds up over time. The body compensates for stress, posture, or movement issues until one small trigger causes a flare-up.

Upper and lower back pain can both have a significant impact on how you feel, move, and function. Here at S&C Therapy, we have found that upper back pain is on the rise, especially in people who spend long hours at a desk or looking at screens. Upper back pain often comes from muscle tension between the shoulder blades, stiffness into extending upwards, or poor posture. Lower back pain tends to involve the lumbar spine and can often be linked to lifting, bending, or sitting for too long.

Both types of back pain can impact your daily life, sleep, and mood. Left untreated, it can lead to fatigue, irritability, or even mental health challenges. Addressing the pain early is key to feeling better, moving well, getting back to doing what you love and most importantly preventing any long term problems.

After a thorough consultation and assessment, we will create a tailored treatment plan. This may include:

  • Hands on manual therapy: To reduce pain and stiffness. Where appropriate, we may incorporate the OptiNeck balance wedge – a specialised tool that restores spinal mobility and function, improves posture, and facilitates more effective hands-on treatment.
  • Personalised exercise programme: Focused on improving spinal flexibility, strengthening core and back muscles, and restoring functional movement.
  • Hot or cold therapy: Applied strategically to manage inflammation and reduce pain in the affected areas of the back.
  • Education and advice: Regarding movement patterns and pain management
  • Acupuncture and dry needling: Targeting trigger points and tight muscles in the back to reduce pain and improve mobility.
  • Massage therapy: To reduce pain and muscle tension
  • Ergonomic recommendations: Specific adjustments to your workspace or daily habits aimed at reducing strain on your back and preventing further injury.

From your very first appointment, we take the time to understand your unique situation through an in-depth consultation and precise diagnosis of your upper or lower back pain.

Based on this, we develop a personalised plan that integrates hands-on Physiotherapy with targeted exercises designed to restore mobility and relieve discomfort. Your personalised home exercise program is delivered straight to your email inbox, allowing you to continue making progress between sessions.

Follow-up appointments are scheduled flexibly to monitor your recovery and refine your treatment as needed, ensuring long-term results.

You’re not just another case of back pain.

With a strong focus on clinical expertise and tailored care, our goal is to address the root cause of your pain, so you can move with confidence, freedom, and peace of mind. Support your progress with flexible follow-up sessions to adjust your plan and ensure the best outcome for lasting recovery.

FAQ - Common Patient Questions

What causes lower back pain?

Lower back pain often results from muscle tension, poor posture, or specific injuries sustained during lifting or bending. We conduct a thorough assessment to pinpoint the exact cause and tailor a recovery programme for you.

Recovery time varies depending on the severity of the condition and the individual. While some patients feel relief after a few sessions, chronic issues may require a longer, personalised rehabilitation plan.

In most cases, gentle movement is more beneficial than complete rest. Our physiotherapists will guide you on safe exercises and activities to maintain mobility without aggravating your symptoms.

No referral is necessary. You can easily book an appointment directly with our clinic to begin your evidence-led treatment journey.

Have been to S&C Therapy twice now, once for a sports massage and the other for a running assessment. Had a great experience both times - Charlie is friendly and personable and uses his expertise to find solutions to your problems in a way that is easy to understand and follow. After my running assessment I felt inspired to put into practice the advice Charlie gave to improve my running performance. The practice is well equipped and welcoming, would highly recommend.

Charlie, physio at S&C Therapy is excellent and would highly recommend; I had been experiencing a far amount of discomfort in my shoulder for many months which was hampering/limiting the range of movement but after having a consultation with Charlie and a number of physio treatment session, together with the exercises that Charlie gave me to follow I now experience no discomfort in my shoulder and now have full movement back which allows me to continue my fitness journey. Charlie took time to understand the issue(s) behind the discomfort in my shoulder and treated it accordingly. Thank you Charlie.

By seeing Charlie regularly for both physio and acupuncture for a few months, I’ve been able to dramatically reduce my pain. He’s always helpful, takes time to understand the problem and thinks outside the box to customise your physio exercises and treatment depending on how you’re feeling. Plus the new physio space is great! I would absolutely recommend Charlie and S&C Therapy to anyone

Charlie really took the time to help address my concern over my knee and create a plan to help recover my knee which really took the stress off me and I realised there was a (structured) solution to get better. Just a bit unclear/wasn't well informed on how long full recovery will take.
